Meaning Management: A Framework for Leadership Ontology

    Get PDF
Leadership is a multifaceted and complex subject of research and demands a sound ontological stance that guides studies for the development of more integrative leadership theories. In this paper, I propose the leadership ontology PVA (perception formation – value creation – achievement realization) and associate it with the two existing leadership ontologies: TRIPOD (leader – member – shared goals) and DAC (direction – alignment – commitment). The leadership ontology PVA, based on a new theory called “meaning management,” consists of three circularly supporting functions: cognitive function to form perception, creative function to generate value, and communicative function to realize higher levels of achievement. The PVA is an epistemology-laden ontology since the meaning management theory allows one to make propositions that explicitly link its three functions with the leadership outcomes: perception, value, and achievement. Moreover, the PVA leadership ontology transcends and includes both the conventional TRIPOD ontology and the DAC ontology

An Interpretation Of The Technical Efficiency As The "Best Possible Deviation" From The Conditions Defined By The Weak Axiom Of Profit Maximization

This paper provides a characterization of the classical Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes’ (CCR) model in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The characterization is based on the Weak Axiom of Profit Maximization (WAPM) in Firm Theory. Efficiency measures for Decision Making Units (DMUs) provided by the classical CCR-DEA model are derived as measurements of deviations from the conditions prescribed by the Weak Axiom of Profit Maximization (WAPM)

Seiford (Socio-Economic Plann. Sci., 2003, forthcoming) provided a comprehensive bibliography of the data envelopment analysis literature up to and including 1995. Since then the literature published in refereed journals has grown by 150%. This paper updates and in a sense upgrades the said bibliography based on an exhaustive search of several leading databases

This paper provides an overview of three widely employed IT governance sets of procedures; these are COBIT, ITIL and OPM3. The main purpose of this study is to propose a new conceptual framework for an IT-Business Awareness Diagnostic Tool. The primary objective of such a framework is to assess the degree of organizational capability in managing IT activities in relation to all business functions and provide guidelines and principles for designing IT management systems as well as setting standards for measuring the progress to be made

Soft systems methodology: a context within a 50-year retrospective of OR/MS

Soft systems methodology (SSM) has been used in the practice of operations research and management science OR/MS) since the early 1970s. In the 1990s, it emerged as a viable academic discipline. Unfortunately, its proponents consider SSM and traditional systems thinking to be mutually exclusive. Despite the differences claimed by SSM proponents between the two, they have been complementary. An extensive sampling of the OR/MS literature over its entire lifetime demonstrates the richness with which the non-SSM literature has been addressing the very same issues as does SSM

Action research contextualizes DEA in a multi-organizational decision-making process

Due to copyright restrictions, the access to the full text of this article is only available via subscription. The theory of participatory action research (PAR) grew out of the practice of problem-solving in groups and organization by involving the participation of all pertinent stakeholders in decision-making process through empowerment. The ontological assumption is that “the world out there” is defined by the participating stakeholders as they understand and perceive it. The actionable knowledge thus produced is mostly used subjectively in the hope of a favorable organizational change or a transformation for betterment. On the other hand, Management Science/Operations Research (MS/OR) is more concerned with epistemological objectivity in identifying and defining managerial issues and finding solutions. In this paper we shall show that MS/OR can benefit from and contribute to PAR in complex decision making contexts. This kind of mutual benefit will be illustrated through a study reported in the area of R&D planning. It will be shown that PAR “contextualizes” problem structuring whereas MS/OR “optimizes” the consensual decision-making process in a multi-organizational context
